How to Score Well In English Exams? Whats The
Secondary Level From 2013, candidates will take the new English Paper which is slightly different from the papers taken in 2012 and before. Therefore the syllabus has changed accordingly. Below are the various sections found in the new examination paper and what students will be taught specifically so as to excel in the new paper.
Writing
Section A: Editing
Grammar rules will be taught specifically so as to excel in this section.
Section B: Situational Writing
Students will be required to write in accordance to the different situations given prompted by a visual text. Students to learn about the various types of writing required and to write appropriate in relation to given scenario.
Section C: Continuous Writing
Students will be required to read widely so that they will be able to gain content and thus deliver in written form what is required. Common test topics will be covered so that they can grasp the concept of writing for audience (marker) in a concise yet informative manner. Different text genre will be taught specifically for this)
Comprehension
Section A
Exposure to various visual texts. To learn about the various question types and the technique used to answer the questions.
Section B
To learn the various comprehension question types that surface from text of narrative or recount genre.
Section CTo learn the various comprehension question types that surface from informational text.
To sieve through the informational text in search of points and to respond with a summary writing task
Listening
Students to respond to recordings/text delivered verbally through open-ended questions and also note taking tasks.
Oral Communication
To be able to read with:
a) expression
b) accuracy
c) appropriate stress and pauses
To be able to converse and particpate in a discussion (using visual prompts) while tapping in to elevated vocabulary and to surface logical points that are persuasive yet cohesive and coherent.
OLD Syllables can be covered if necessary for building of foundation:
Paper 1 (Writing Tasks)
Paper 3 (Oral Examinations)
Usual preparation will be on O level examination components.
(Note: some schools do include other examination components like public speaking or grammar tasks and they are graded for those tasks for their continual assessments, these components can be covered upon request)

- Free Writing (all types of writing will be covered, narratives, personal recounts, descriptive, expositions, continuations etc)
- Situational Writing (Formal Letter, Informal Letter, Notices, Advertisements, Reports, Proposals etc)
- All Comprehension Question types will be covered : knowledge, inference and higher-order thinking questions
- All Comprehension text types will be covered as well (Informational text and narratives)
- Vocabulary Items (all categories with various difficulty levels: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
- Summary (sieving of ideas, writing in a logical manner with cohesion and rephrasing of points)
Paper 3 (Oral Examinations)
- Part 1 – Reading Aloud
- Part 2 – Picture Discussion
- Part 3 – Conversation
