How Much Does Primary School Tuition Cost in Singapore?
Primary school tuition in Singapore usually costs $25 to $90 an hour for one-to-one home tuition, depending on the tutor’s experience and your child’s level. Group classes at a neighbourhood tuition centre typically run about $200 to $400 a month per subject for four lessons. Premium chains can charge $550 or more. Upper primary (P5 and P6) sits at the top of each range because of PSLE.
Those are the broad numbers. Here’s what sits behind them, so you can plan a budget that makes sense for your child.

| Format | Typical cost | Notes |

| Home tuition, full-time tutor | $35β$55/hr | Tutoring is their main job |
| Home tuition, ex/current MOE teacher | $55β$90/hr | NIE-trained, highest demand |

| Premium tuition chain | $550β$650+/month per subject | Branded curriculum, larger brand premium |
These are typical market rates in 2026, pulled from published rate guides. Individual tutors and centres will vary.
Home Tuition Rates by Tutor Type
Home tutors charge by the hour, and rates climb with each year of primary school.
| Level | Part-time | Full-time | Ex/current MOE |
| P1βP3 | $25β$35 | $35β$50 | $55β$80 |
| P4βP6 | $30β$40 | $40β$55 | $60β$90 |
Many home tutors set a minimum of 1.5 hours per lesson. So a weekly lesson with a full-time tutor at $45/hr comes to roughly $270 a month for one subject.
Tuition Centre Fees
Centres usually charge a monthly fee per subject for four lessons. Group sizes vary a lot. Some centres run classes of 10 to 15. Others keep groups small so the teacher can follow each child.
Watch for extras on top of the monthly fee:
- Registration fee: usually a one-off $50 to $200
- Deposit: often one month’s fees, refundable with proper notice
- Materials: sometimes included, sometimes $10β$30 a month
Most centres quote fees inclusive of GST, but it’s worth confirming.
Why P5 and P6 Cost More
It’s PSLE. Upper primary lessons cover heavier content, more problem sums and more exam technique. Demand goes up too, so tutors and centres charge more. Intensive revision classes before the exam often carry an extra 20% to 30% over normal term rates.
If you’re budgeting across the primary years, expect costs to rise noticeably from P4 onwards.
How Much Is Primary Tuition in Singapore Per Year?
Monthly fees add up fast once you multiply them out. A rough picture for one subject over a school year:
- Neighbourhood centre group class: about $2,400 to $4,800 a year
- Full-time home tutor, 1.5 hours weekly: about $2,500 to $3,500 a year
- Ex-MOE teacher, 1.5 hours weekly: about $4,000 to $5,800 a year
Two or three subjects doubles or triples that. For context, Singapore’s Household Expenditure Survey 2023 put average spending on tuition at about $105 a month per household. That average includes families who spend nothing at all, so households with tuition-going kids spend well above it.
Getting Value, Not Just a Low Price
The cheapest option isn’t always the best value. Neither is the most expensive. A few things are worth checking:
- Group size. Smaller groups mean more time with the teacher.
- Teacher experience. Ask who’ll actually teach your child, not just who runs the centre.
- MOE syllabus alignment. Lessons should follow what your child’s doing in school.
- Progress updates. You should hear how your child is doing, not just see an invoice.
- Trial lessons or flexibility. It helps to know the fit is right before committing to a term.
Location matters more than parents expect. A centre near home saves hours of travel every month.

FAQs
Is group tuition or one-to-one tuition better value?
It depends on your child. Group classes cost less per hour and suit kids who learn well alongside others. One-to-one suits children who need a lot of individual attention or have specific gaps to close.
Are tuition centre fees inclusive of GST?
Most centres in Singapore quote GST-inclusive fees, but not all do. Ask before you register.
How many subjects should my child take tuition for?
Start with the subject they’re struggling with most. Many families add a second subject in P5 or P6 as PSLE gets closer.
When should my child start primary tuition?
There’s no fixed age. Some parents start in P1 for foundations. Others wait until a gap shows up, often around P3 or P4 when problem sums and science begin.
Are there extra fees beyond the monthly tuition fee?
Often, yes. Registration, deposits and materials are common. Ask for a full breakdown so you know the real monthly cost.
